按照科学理论的解释，这种“闷倒牛”毒蘑菇通体布满毒素，不必食用，只要触及，就能引起人类类似吸毒的致幻作用，造成神经抑制、精神错乱以及各种幻觉反应，出现大汗、发热、流涎、流泪、发冷、心跳减慢、血压降低、呼吸急促、瞳孔缩小、眼花、视力减弱甚至模糊不清等体表特征，随即在短时间内引起支气官痉挛、急性肺水肿，导致病人谵语、抽搐、昏迷、木僵，因呼吸抑制而死亡。
那是致命的超级毒蘑菇——这也是林轩没有用手指下探摸索、反而是先探身用侦查的主要原因。
